I also had some wild adventures with my Uncle, including trips over the Mexican border to visit the bar that allegedly introduced the Sloe Gin Fizz, and a night of dancing on a rooftop in Acapulco at a New Year’s Eve party at which I got to meet Neil Armstrong.Īnd there was the time when he visited us in NY and he somehow wangled tickets to see the Supremes in NYC.Īlong the way, he stayed up with me, next to the fireplace in his lovely home in now devastated Port Aransas, when my heart was broken. I would never have had this life-changing moment without my Uncle and Aunt opening their house to me that January. I spent the term offering speech therapy to teenagers and adults who had profound disabilities a glorious day that I will never forget occurred when one my students connected the word (“ball”) with the thing I was holding. You could take a course or do approved volunteer work. Our birthdays were one day apart, and we celebrated them together.ĭuring my junior year of college, I spent a month with him and my Aunt during the “January Term” that my College offered. My Uncle has been my favorite relative (outside of my immediate family) for my entire life. Many of those were public spaces, where people could congregate to enjoy and marvel. Like other architects with magical imaginations that they were able to translate into geometry and engineering - things beyond my skills or understanding - he designed and built some amazing structures.
